Chapter Fifteen

Asking Dillon to the wedding had been spontaneous. And, in retrospect, a mistake. He recounted the whole thing to Clem, morosely, hiding in Clem’s office while the world of Nan’s went on like usual outside the closed door.

Clem didn’t seem convinced. “You surprised him, but I don’t think you should count him out yet. Eat your salad.”

“How can you possibly eat salad for breakfast? It’s so…cold.”

“Eat, Gage. He’s gonna come to the Dugout today?”

“I told him to come today. Doesn’t mean he will. Maybe he got home and decided I’m a bad idea.”

“Back up. You think Dillon’s somehow got cold feet after a night you’re calling the best sex you’ve ever had because you asked him to go with you to the wedding? How, in your twisted little brain, does that make sense?”

“It’s too fucking soon, I told you.” Gage forced another bite of lettuce, cabbage, carrot, and—fine—oddly delicious grilled tofu. “One night. Two dates. Way too soon to go to a wedding.”

“The wedding’s not for three weeks. Lots of nights between now and then to take the edge off.”

Gage pointed his fork across the desk. “Excuse me? And you’ll be taking a date, then, Clem?”

“Totally different situation.”

“You and Neil didn’t just start dating yesterday.”

“Neil and I aren’t dating. It’s not even remotely similar.”

“Clem, come on. You two have been doing this dance since he got back to town.”

“If Neil wanted to date someone, he’d find someone to date.”

Good plan, except he’s in love with you. Probably for much longer than he’ll ever say.

Gage crammed another bite of salad into his mouth. Best to not alienate one of his oldest friends over a stupid fight he’d never win.

“Something stopping you from calling Dillon right now? Can’t help but notice you’re taking up my time sitting here when you could be with him.”

“He’s supposed to come by the bar later.”

Clem raised his eyebrows. “So you’re just going to wait and see?”

“I don’t want to push too fast.” But good point. Gage snagged the last few pieces of tofu and tossed the remains of the lettuce into the trash.

“So you’re going to wait until he comes in and watch him play with his computer for a few hours, and then what, Gage?”

“Hell, I don’t know.” He hadn’t made it that far; he’d just be happy if Dil showed up at all.

Clem stood up. “You got the kids opening today?”

“I told them I’d be back.”

“We work too much, Gage.”

“That’s rich coming from you.”

“Fine. I’ll hire a manager when you do. Right now, though, you’ve got coverage. So call in, tell Stephen you’ll be in late, and go over to Dillon’s.” He waved his hand, a sweeping motion toward the door. “Get out.”

Gage left Nan’s, got in his car, and drove to Dillon’s neighborhood. He parked where he had last time, feeling absurdly exposed. When he called the Dugout, Stephen told him to take his time. Little Stevie might have been smirking.

Punk.

Now that he was here, he hesitated.

What did he want? Clem was
